Newspapers

Most of you have seen a glimpse or even heard a story or two (on Seesaw) from the holiday newspapers the kids wrote upon their return from winter break. They spent a few days developing and writing stories for their Holiday News before enjoying a morning of reading each others stories over a few timbits. It was a lovely way to celebrate their hard work and create a sense of community in the classroom. During the initial stages of this project, one of the children asked who would be reading our newspapers. I loved that question because it demonstrated his understanding of writing for the purpose of readership. We all have stories to tell, they live within us. This personal writing was meant to be shared. It created a clear purpose and helped develop authorship, knowing their peers would be consuming their holiday worthy stories. Maybe not the scope some were hoping for, but an audience nonetheless!
